Can anyone help me answer this question?

I just received this inquiry via Facebook:

I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis January 2010. I am having a hard time keeping my independence and just bought a 3 month old lab to train. I have been after my insurance company for months to help pay for train my dog but seem to get the run around.
I believe that people need to be educated regarding the benefits of service animals for the disabled. The process of trying to get a service animal through existing organizations is very hard process and a long wait. I can't afford a long waiting process. Please help.

  1. Here is the follow up: Thank you. My Lab is going to the vet Tuesday and I will have the vet write a letter stating my dog, Zoe, is a service dog in training. From there I have to go to the auditors office to get her a special doggie license. I will post my comment on your blog later today. I am gonna go back to bed. It's been a long painful night. I appreciate your time.

  2. You need to look around when searching for a service dog organization. It's really not that hard a process, usually an application form and then an interview. From NEADS website: "Presently there is a three to six month waiting period for most applicants." It will take you up to two years to train your own dog provided you have the skill and energy to do so. And even then there's no guarantee that the dog will have what it takes. Over half of the dogs in programs don't make it and they start with the cream of the crop.

  3. Selecting the right dog for the work takes lots of experience. Training takes a lot of energy, endurance and knowhow. i strongly recommend that you work with a professional - rather than going it alone. If you want to contact me I'll be glad to give you more guideance. I offer "Walkabout" experiences for potential clients so that you can actually feel what it is like to walk with a Mobility dog. I then guarantee that I will work with you until you are a successful team. It is important to work with a professional who will see you through the process of teambuilding!
